Old Maps of Korvala
Here you can follow the growth of our village over the course of a century with these local maps, from hand drawn to printed versions - a far cry from the convenient digital services of today!
1916
Korvala is the first named property in our area, located where the road runs closest to the river.
1926
Korvala is joined on the map a decade later by two more properties, Kulpakko and Hämäläinen.
1929
More detail and some early property lines are added.
1940
A simplified war-time version of the previous map.
1959
The word "Retkeilymaja" appears next to our property, as it evolved from an inn to a hostel. A post office, telephone exchange and schoolroom were set up in Kulpakko, owned by the Tiainen family. This prompted the village to adopt Tiainen as it's name.
1962
As the traffic increased on the main road to the nothermost point of Europe, major roadworks were embarked upon to widen it: hills were cut away, sharp bends were made more gentle, new bridges were built and it was resurfaced with asphalt.​
1975
The village had it's heyday in the '60s and early 70s: as families grew, so did the number of farms and local services. The population was at its highest then, before education gave the younger generation more work oportunities elsewhere.
1995
More fields (yellow) were cleared to make more hay for more cows, but also many forest roads have appeared, which were built so that the larger logging vehicles that were needed to harvest the trees could access Finland's green gold.
